Is a full ADHD evaluation worth pursuing?

These two short questionnaires are the same validated screening tools clinicians use as a first step. They take about five minutes and give you a clear read on whether the pattern you are seeing is worth a closer look.

A screener is not a diagnosis. It cannot tell you whether you or your child has ADHD. It can only tell you whether the next step, a comprehensive evaluation, is a reasonable one to take.

Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale

The ASRS v1.1, developed by the World Health Organization with researchers at Harvard and NYU. Eighteen questions about how often you experience common attention and restlessness symptoms.

Completing this questionnaire cannot diagnose ADHD and cannot rule it out. A positive result does not mean you or your child has ADHD. A negative result does not mean you or your child does not. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, trauma, learning differences, and ordinary life stress can all produce high scores on a screener like this one.

The only purpose of this tool is to help you decide whether a comprehensive ADHD evaluation with a qualified clinician is a reasonable next step. ADHD can only be diagnosed through a full clinical assessment that includes a detailed history, standardized testing, input from people who know you, and careful consideration of other explanations.

Do not start, stop, or change any medication, treatment, school plan, or other decision based on this result. Do not use this result as evidence of a diagnosis for any school, employer, physician, or legal purpose.
